画像はかつてカリブ海域を荒らし回った有名な海賊の一人であるヘンリー・モーガン (英国人) の肖像画である。
モーガンは1670年代初めパナマ地峡を横断し、太平洋沿岸沿いのスペイン統治下の港町パナマ・シティ (当時南米大陸からスペインへの
金銀財宝の輸送中継地であり、世界でも有数の豊かな町であった) を徹底的に略奪したことで知られる。説明パネルは海賊および

Famous Pirates
Pirates have existed since ancient times. Julias Caesar was captured and ransomed by pirates
in the days of ancient Rome. Every age has its famous pirates. The best known pirates are those from the
"Golden Age of Piracy", which lasted from around 1660 to 1740.It was during this age that pirates like
Blackbeard, Henry Morgan, Henry Avery, and the most famous female pirates, Anne Bonney and Mary Read,
brought terror to the coast and high seas.
Henry Morgan
Born in Wales, Henry Morgan was leader of the Port Royale (Jamaica) buccaneers, who were known as
the "Brethren of the Coast" and the scourge of the Caribbean in the 1660s. Sailing under privateer's
orders from England, but known as a pirate to the Spaniards, Morgan's greatest expoit was an
overland march across the isthmus of Panama in 1671 and his capture and sacking of Panama City, then the
richest city in the world. Knighted for his deeds, Sir Henry Morgan became Depty Governor of
Jamaica and ironically, a scourge of pirates.
