カラベル（船模型） [マニラ／アヤラ博物館]

画像はフィリピン首都マニラのマカティ地区にあるアヤラ博物館 (The Ayala Museum) の「船舶ギャラリー (Gallery of Boats)」に展示 されるカラベルの船模型である。展示説明パネルには次のように記される。 Caravel In the 16th century, after the Treaty of Tordesillas finalized the division of the world into two halves "like an orange" between Portugal and Spain, the countries' respective rulers sent their sailors out to commandeer as much land as they could. Under Royal decree, both Portuguese and Spanish would-be conquerors set out upon the ocean in caravels, which were built expressly for long voayages. Ferdinand Magellan himself journeyed across the Pacific in a caravel. The caravel was characterized by a broad bow; a high narrow poop; and two or three masts with a triangular lateen sail. 16世紀のこと、トルデシリャス条約によって、ポルトガルとスペインとは、オレンジを縦割りにするかのように、世界を半分ずつに分割し合った。 両国のそれぞれの支配者は、世界中のできる限り多くの陸地を徴用するために、それぞれの船乗りたちを海へ送り出した。 国王の命令で、ポルトガルとスペインの征服者らは、長い航海に堪えうるように建造されたカラベルでもって海に乗り出したのである。 フェルディナンド・マゼラン (Ferdinand Magellan) 自身もそんなカラベルで太平洋を横断した。カラベルの特徴とされるのは、ふくらんだ船首、幅狭くして高くせり 上がる船尾、三角形のラティーンセールをもつ2、3本のマストである。 [画像撮影: 2018.3.24 マニラのマカティ地区アヤラ博物館にて][拡大画像: x28190.jpg][拡大画像: x28191.jpg]
