英国ウェールズのフレデリック皇子の絢爛なバージ [実物展示]

画像は英国グリニッジの「国立海洋博物館」に展示される、ウェールズのプリンス・フレデリックの 絢爛なバージ(実物)である。 展示されるバージは、1732年に、フレデリック皇子 (1707‐51年) のために建造されたものである。 因みに、1731～32年にかけて、W.ケントが設計し、J.ホールが製作し、J.リチャードが装飾を行なったものである。 その設計では、テムズ川を行き来したウェリー＊ (一種の水上タクシー;　平底の川船、渡船、はしけ) のうちでもより小さいものを ベースにしていたが、中央部にはキャビンが施されフラットになっていた。 漕ぎ手は21人で、一人のバージ・マスターが操舵した。船首部はせり上がりながら長く突き出しており、乗客が濡れずに岸に上がるのを 可能にした。また、高くせり上がる船尾部はバージ・マスターが中央部にあるキャビン越しに前方を見通せるようになっていた。 バージを設計したケントは、身分の卑しい画家であり、建築家、庭園・内装のデザイナーでもあった。そして、当時裕福で影響力の あるいく人かの人々のために働いた。フレデリック皇子はロンドン西郊のキュー (Kew) の自宅の建築のためにケントを選び、また カールトン・ハウスにある庭園のデザイナーにも指定した。 ケントはグロテスクなものに興味があって、バージの舳先に飾り付けられたアニメのようなイルカの頭にそのことが読み取れる＊＊。 彼はまたバージの船頭たちのそろいの制服をもデザインした。 なお、フレデリック皇子は、芸術愛好家であり、アマチュアの音楽家でもあった。成人した後の多くの時間を父親のジョージII世国王と 過ごした。そして、彼のバージは父親のいずれのそれよりも速く、また美しいものであった。 18世紀においては、テムズ川をボートで移動するやり方は最も速く辿り着く方法であった。 19世紀中期よりロンドンの道路事情は改善され、テムズ川が移動のために用いられることは少なくなったが、公式行事の際にはテムズ川は 重要な舞台となった。フレデリック皇子のバージがテムズ川で最後に用いられたのは1849年であり、ヴィクトリア女王の夫である プリンス・アルバートによるものであった。 展示説明パネルには次のように記されている（概要は上記の通りである）。 Prince Frederick's Barge Designed by William Kent and built by John Hall, with carved decoration by James Richards, 1731-32. Fit for a King The design of Prince Frederick's barge was based on the smaller Thames wherry (a type of water taxi), but with a flat mid-section to accommodate the cabin. It was rowed by up to twenty-one oarsmen and steered by a barge master. The long overhanging bow (front) enabled passengers to step ashore without getting wet feet. The high rising stern (back) allowed the barge master to see over the top of the cabin. Prince Frederick was a leader of fashion. The eye-catching splendour of his barge enhanced his royal status. Its carved decorations symbolize his position as the heir to the British throne and suggest the maritime power of the nation. Who designed this barge? The designer was William Kent (1686-1748). A man of humble origins, he was a painer, architect, garden and interior designer, who worked for some of the most wealthy and influential people of the day. Prince Fredrick chose Kent as the architect for his home at Kew and as designer of his gardens at Carlton House. Kent's interest in grotesque forms can be seen in the cartoon-like dolphin's head on the prow of the barge. He also designed the bargemen's livery. Why was this barge the limousine of its day? In the 18th century, travelling by boat on the Thames was the fastest way to get around. This barge was completed in 1732 for Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-51). Frederick was a lover of the arts and an amateur musician: he spent much of his adult life competing with his father, King George II, and his bargewas faster and more beautiful than any of his father's. In April 1736 Frederick first met his newly arrived bride, Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, in the Queen's House at Greenwich: after dining with her there he returned to London in his new barge. From the mid-19th century, as London's roads improved, the Thames was less used for travel but it remains a significant stage for public occasions. Frederick's barge was last used on the river by Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, in 1849.
