英国ロンドン近郊のグリニッジにある国立海洋博物館にはいろいろなフィギュアヘッドが展示されている。 画像の13体のフィギュアヘッドに付された展示説明パネルには概略次のように記されている。 「船に名前を授けるフィギュアヘッド。18世紀後半までは、船名は通常船尾部(舵の上部)に記されていた。また、船名は船首部の フィギュアヘッドによって表わされた。王立海軍のフィギュアヘッドは海軍工廠 (Royal Dockyards) の艦船のため公式の彫像者によって、 そして後にあっては造船業者 (彼らもまた商船向けのフィグアヘッドを制作した) の手によって設計され、制作された。 新造船については、彫像者は海軍の検査官 (軍艦の設計に責任を有する官吏) による承認を得るために、フィギュアヘッドのデザインを 提出した。承認を受けると、フィギュアヘッドは通常松のようなかなり柔かい木でもって彫像された。 このような彫像はさほど長くは続かなかった。それ故に、フィギュアヘッドは時々他のものに取って代られた。そして、 過去に制作された何千ものフィギュアヘッドのうち、相対的にみて、わずかなものだけが今に残されている。」 FIGUREHEADS Putting a face to a name By the late 18th century, a ship's name was usually written across its stern (at the back, over the rudder). The name was also represented by a figurehead on the bow (front). Royal Naval figureheads were designed and made by official ship carvers in the Royal Dockyards, and later by contractors who also did those for merchant ships. For a new ship, the carver would submit a figurehead design for approval by the Surveyor of the Navy (the official responsible for warship design). When approved, the figurehead was usually carved in a fairly soft wood such as pine. This often did not last long, so figureheads were sometimes replaced, and relatively few of the thousands made now survive.
