米国コンスティチューション号 USS Constitution [模型]

画像は18世紀末期に建造され今もって現役の米国海軍帆走軍艦の「コンスティチューション号」である。 説明パネルによると、フランスとのナポレオン戦争や独立戦争などにおいて活躍した。特に独立戦争中の1812年8月19日に 英国の軍艦「グリエール」、「ジャバ」と交戦した際、無名の英国水兵が「あの艦は鉄でできている！」と叫んだため、 コンスティチューション号は「老練のアイアンサイズ」(Old Ironsides; (pl.)老練の甲鉄艦) という誉れある称号が与えられることとなった。 コンスティチューション号は建造地のボストンの海軍造船所 (Boston Naval Shipyard) の岸壁に係留されている。 今でも海軍船籍簿に登録される。同艦は米国が誇る目に見える海事遺産の証であり、また愛国心と国の誇りを表わす象徴でもある。 USS CONSTITUTION USS CONSTITUTION is a sailing warship commissioned in 1797. USS CONSTITUTION participated actively in the Quasi War with France and U.S. Revolutionary War. During one of her recorded battles, on August 19, 1812, USS CONSTITUTION fought agaist HMS GUERRIERE and HMS JAVA exchanged heavy gun firing. At the time, an unknown British sailor shouted, "Her sides are made of iron!" Thus, USS CONSTITUTION gained the renowned title of "Old Ironsides". USS CONSTITUTION is home ported in Boston Naval Shipyard and is still a part of the U.S. Navy ship register. She is tangible evidence of America's proud naval heritage as well as a modern day representation of the nation's patriotism and pride.
