画像は有名な英国人海賊の一人であるウイリアム・キッド船長の肖像画である。キッド船長はかつては西インド諸島でフランスに対する
私掠行為に従事していたニューヨーク商人であった。英国王室の命を受けて1969年インド洋に海賊の取り締まりに出た時に、
彼は部下の乗組員を木のバケツで頭を殴って殺してしまった。彼は英国で裁判に付されたが、自己弁護にしくじり、
結局処刑されてしまった。海賊として悪意に満ち満ちていた人物ではなかったし、また海賊として成功した者でもなかった。
説明パネルでは、キッドについて次のように記されている。
Captain Kidd
A notorious and well-known pirate, second in fame to Blackbeard, William Kidd was a New York merchant who had previously served
as a privateer against the French in the West Indies. Commissioned by the Crown in 1696 to hunt down pirates in the Indian
Ocean, he was forced by his crew to raid vessels himself when no pirates and bounties could be found. In an argument
with one of his crew, he killed the man by hitting him in the head with a wooden bucket. Returning home in 1699,
he was charged with piracy and murder.
Taken to England for trial, he bungled his own defence and was hanged. His status as a gentleman and his well-publicized
trial made him famous, for he was neither vicious nor successful as a pirate.
