カナダのバンクーバー海洋博物館内に海賊展示コーナーがある。画像はそこに展示される絵図の一枚で、ガレオン船を襲撃しようと カヌーで接近する海賊たちを描いたものである。海賊船長バーソロミュー・シャープとその部下たちがどのようにして、 そそり立つような馬鹿でかい3隻ものガレオン船 (帆船の一種) を襲撃しえたのか。絵図の説明パネルには次のような説明文が綴られている。 Attacking a Galleon A 1680 account tells how Captain Bartholomew Sharp and his buccaneers captured three Spanish galleons using canoes. Rowing out to the largest ship, they used their long-barrelled muskets to shoot the man at the wheel and the sailors working the sails. The ship drifted and the sails flapped loosely. Firing continuously, the buccaneers rowed up under the ship's stern and shot the lines that controlled the mainsail, cutting them. The sail dropped and the ship slowed to a near stop. They then hammered wooden wedges into the rudder, completely disabling the galleon. Climbing over the sides, they found two-thirds of the crew dead from their musket fire. Using the guns of the big ship and the same tactics, they then forced the other two ships to surrender. Sixty-eight buccaneers in three small canoes, using boldness, the speed of their sailing canoes, and excellent marksmanship, had defeated 228 Spanish soldiers and sailors with a loss of only eighteen pirates. [参考] to be at the wheel: 舵輪を取る、操舵する、操船する、運転する. to row up: 力漕する. marksmanship: n.射撃の技量;　射撃術、弓術. 1680年の報告によれば、海賊船長バーソロミュー・シャープとその部下の海賊たち（バッカニアズ buccaneers）はカヌーを用いて スペインの3隻のガレオン船を捕獲したことが語られている。 彼らは最も大きいガレオンへ漕いで近づいて行き、長い銃身をもつ樽型マスケット銃（ライフルの前身）をもって、操舵手や操帆乗組員 を射撃した。船は漂流することになり、帆はたるみパタパタするにいたる。 海賊たちは連続射撃をしながら、船尾直下まで力漕し、メーンセール (主帆) を操作する動索を撃って切断した。 帆は垂れ、船はほとんど失速するにいたった。その後、海賊は舵に木製の楔を打ち込み、ガレオンを完全に操船不能とさせた。 ガレオンの舷側をよじ登ると、マスケットの銃撃で3分の2の乗組員は死に体の状態にあった。 そして、奪い取ったガレオン船の銃砲をもって、先と同じ戦術の下他の2隻をも強引にねじ伏せたのである。 3隻の小さなカヌーに乗った68人の海賊たちは、その大胆さと、その帆走カヌーの速力、優れた射撃術を生かして、228人の スペイン人の兵士と乗組員を敗北させた。海賊が失った人命はわずか18人であった。 [2015.2.2-17 カナダ&キューバの旅／博物館訪問 2015.2.3／2015.3.24 記][拡大画像: x26625.jpg][拡大画像: x26626.jpg: 説明書き]
