ガレー船のペンテコンター (Pentekonter) 模型 [ヘレニック海洋博物館／ギリシャ] 1 2 画像はギリシャのヘレニック海洋博物館 (Hellenic Maritime Museum)(所在地: ゼア・マリーナ地区) に展示される「ペンテコンター」 という紀元前7世紀の一種のガレー船である。 模型の製作者はG.ヴァメノス。監修はK.アレクサンドリスであると記される。 模型の解説銘板によれば、ペンテコンターは、片舷25丁（両舷では50丁）のオールを備えていた。紀元前2000年頃に出現した。 この頃に用いられていた他船と同様、輸送目的であった。紀元前7世紀において、商船と軍船との区別ははっきりとしたものとなった。 当時にあっては、ペンテコンターは明らかに戦争目的を担った。そして、トリレーム (三段櫂船) が優勢になる前の紀元前7世紀においては、 他の小型の船とともにペンテコンターが、そしてトライアコンター (トリアコンターター　triakonter) が2つの基本的な軍船を構成した。 ペンテコンターはまたサラミスの海戦にも参加した。 [参 考]ペンテコンター (pentekonter) :　古代ギリシア(特に紀元前5世紀頃などのキリシア)の軍船の主力をなすもの。 強いて和訳すれば、「五十櫂船」という意味のギリシア語。片舷に25人、従って両舷に50人の漕ぎ手を乗せていた。 ムカデの足のようにオールを突き出した細長い船で、吃水は浅く平底である. The pentekonter was a ship that had 50 oars (25 on each side) and appeared around the 2nd millennium B.C. Like other ships of this period, she was used for transportation. During the 7th century, the distinction between merchant ships and warships becomes clear. Then, she clearly assumed a war mission. The pentekonters along with another smaller type of ships, the triakonters constituted the two basic warships in the 7th century B.C. before the trireme's prevalence.　Pentekonters also participated in the naval battle of Salamina.
