測 鉛 (sounding lead)

オーストラリア国立海洋博物館(在シドニー)に実物の測鉛が展示されている。 沿岸沿いの浅い水域や岩礁海域などにおける水深測量の最も古いやり方の一つは、ロープ(測深線)の先端に取り付け られた鉛製の重い錘(おもり)を船の舷越しに海中へ投げ入れるという方法であった。錘が触底した時に測深線上の印(マーク) をもって水深が読み取られた。 錘の底部は凹形になっていて(画像参照)、アーミング・ホール(arming hole)と言われる。そこに獣脂などが埋め 塗られる。錘が触底すると砂、泥、あるいはサンゴなどが獣脂にくっ付くことで底質が推定される。 展示には次のような説明書きがなされている。 Swinging the lead: One of the oldest methods of figuring out water depth was by casting a heavy lead weight attached to a line over the side. When it hit the bottom, the depth was read off the marks on the line. Heaving the lead? Swinging the lead? The expression 'heaving the lead' comes from the action of heaving a rope (marked to indicate depth and with a lump of lead on the end) into the water. This finds out the depth and the nature of the seabed when a ship navigates in shallow or restricted waters. It was an important job, especially when a ship crossed a reef and is one of the earliest methods used to safely navigate a coastline. Quite often people still use the expression 'swinging the lead' for the same action. But in naval terms, this refers to a sailor not doing the job properly. A lazy sailor would just swing the lead line back and forth without actually letting it go into the water. The term 'swinging the lead' is also used in non-naval situations to mean someone is not doing their job well enough.
