Cape Bowling Green Lighthouse

    Cape Bowling Green Lighthouse

Cape Bowling Green Lighthouse was built in 1874 to asist vessels passing through the Great Barrier Reef via the Inner Route. Cape Bowling Green was renowned for its sand shoals, the cause of many groundings.
The lighthouse was built using local hardwood for the frame and imported iron sheets from Britain. Chance Brothers supplied the original third-order dioptic type light along with the fuel system that operatd on kerosene. The tower was prefabricated in Brisbane under the direction of Queensland's colonial architect.
It was one of a series of 22 lighthouses built to this design by the colonial government to aid ships serving the expanding North Queensland ports. There was also hope of attracting increased shipping to the eastern route to Australian ports from Europe after the Suez Canal opened in 1869.
Cape Bowling Green Lighthouse has been modified over time to incorporate changes in light technology. It was relocated to the National Maritime Museum in 1987 when it was replaced with a modern tower.
