「South Steyne
Welcome Aboard.... South Steyne The World's Largest Operational Steam Ferry South Steyne was build at Leith, Scotland in 1938 & steamed to Australia via the Suez Canal to operate on the famous Sydney Harbour "Seven Mile Run" from Circular Quay to Manly for the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company. It entered service on October 24, 1938 throughout Australia's 150th centenary year and crossed Sydney Harbour more than 100,000 times carrying in excess of 192 million passengers throughout the 36 years it operated, including the popular "Showboat" ocean going cruises to Broken Bay. Fire destroyed the vessel in 1974 at Balmain and it was withdrawn from service. It lay idle for many years in Newcastle ready for the shipwreckers breaking yards until in 1988, the Victorian Government as part of its Bi-Centennial program, commenced a multi-million dollar restoration of the ship back to its original 'Art Deco' glory. South Steyne operated in Melbourne from 1988 to 1989 as a charter boat and floating restaurant. In 1990 the steamship was purchased by its present owners and returned to NSW. Classified by the National Trust and the Heritage Council, South Steyne is deemed to be one of the 14 icons of Sydney.
