Henry Avery
Active in the 1690s in the Indian Ocean, Henry Avery, also known as John Avery, Long Ben and Captain Bridgeman, was famed as the "Arch Pirate." Operating out of Madagascar, Avery's most noteworthy exploit was his capture of the Great Moghul's ship Gang-i-Sawai in the Red Sea in 1696. A tremendous fortune was seized as Avery and his men tortured the passengers. It was said that the momen leapt overboard and drowned rather than face Avery's crew. His fate is unknown; some say he married the Great Moghul's daughter, who was a passenger aboard the ship. Others say he died in poverty, swindled out of his ill-gotten gains.
