中国マカオのギア砦に建つ「ギア灯台」 [マカオ]

マカオのなかで標高が最も高い丘上に築かれた「ギアの砦(要塞)」（Fortaleza da Guia／Guia Fortress）の敷地内に、マカオで 最古の灯台（ギア灯台／Faról da Guia／Guia Lighthouse／中国語で「東洋望燈塔」と称される）がそそり立つ。 砦そのものはポルトガル人によって1622年と1638年の間に築かれた。敷地内には「ギア教会」(Guia Chapel)と 「ギア灯台」(Guia Lighthouse) が並んで立つ。灯台は1865年に建設された。その高さは15メートル、基部での直径は7メートル、 上部では5メートルである。中国南部沿岸にあっては最初の近代的な灯台であった。今でも立派に現役を務めている。 砦の入り口に立つ案内立標には下記のとおりの歴史的背景が記されている。それによれば、砦は教会と灯台とともにマカオの海事、 軍事、キリスト布教の歴史のシンボルである。 Guia Fortress Built between 1622 and 1638, this fortress was, together with Mount Fortress, crucial in the protection of the city from the tentative Dutch invasion of 1622. Inside the fortress stands Guia Chapel, built around 1622 and Guia Lighthouse built in 1865, the first modern lighthouse on China's coast, still in operation ti this day. Macao takes the reference for its geographic coordinates from this lighthouse. Guia Chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of Guia, noting that "Guia" means "Guidance" in Portuguese. In 1996, frescoes were uncovered inside Guia Chapel during routine conservation works. The chapel's elaborate frescoes depict representations of both western and Chinese themes, displaying motifs of religious and mythological inspiration that are a perfect example of Macao's multicultural dimension. Guia Fortress, together with the Lighthouse and Guia Chapel are remarkable symbols of Macao's military, maritime and missionary past.
