ニューベッドフォードは米国東海岸の港町 (マサチューセッツ州) である。かつては米国最大の捕鯨基地であった。画像は、
ニューベッドフォード市街にある National Whaling Historical Park のビジターセンターにおいて見かけたニューベッドフォードの
1870年頃の港風景である。捕鯨船と鯨油樽で桟橋が埋め尽くされている。
同センターのすぐ近くには「ニューベッドフォード捕鯨博物館（New Bedford Whaing Museum）」が、また港の埠頭には
船舶博物館の捕鯨船「Ernestia号」（Schooner Ernestia Museum）が係留され一般公開されている。
河口 (Acushnet River) をはさんで、ニューベッドフォードの対岸には、江戸末期から明治初期に活躍した歴史上の人物・
ジョン万次郎の物語に登場するファエヘブンという町がある。

Whaleships that sailed from the port of New Bedford required enormous quantities of supplies drawn
from surrounding farms and factories. In a single year in 1830s, New Bedford ships took to sea 36,000
barrels of flour; 30,000 barrels of beef and pork; 18,000 bolts of canvas; 3,000 tons of iron;
6,000,000 barrel staves; and 2,000 tons of rope-in addition to tons of molasses, rice, beans, peas,
corn, tea, coffee, and sugar.
