Vampire is the last Australian example of a gun ship and was built at the Cockatoo Island Dockyard in Sydney. Three Daring class destroyers were built between 1948 and 1958 - Vampire, Vendetta and Voyager. Comissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in 1959, Vampire served in Fleet tours and naval exercises in the 1960s as part of the Commonwealth Strategic Reserve with SETO (South-East Asia Treaty Organisation). It took part in exercises off Singapore during the Indonesian Confrontation with Malaysia in 1965 and made troop escort runs to Vietnam in 1965-67 and 1969. It was never directly involved in action. Vampire was extensively refitted in 1970-71 to modernise surveillance and gunfire control systems. Ten years later a final refit was completed and Vampire became the Navy's premier training ship. Decommissioned and partly stripped in 1986, Vampire was lent to the National Maritime Museum in 1990 and then transferred in 1997. [2011.04.04-12 オーストラリア国立海洋博物館にて][拡大画像: x23466.jpg]
