英国リバープールの海と船のある風景（1）:　
大西洋横断定期航路客船「RMS ルシタニア号」(1909年)のプロペラ

海運業・造船業が盛んであった英国・リバープール。その市内を流れるマージー川沿いに、かつて数多くのドックが次々と 建設されて行った。「アルバート・ドック」 (Albert Dock) もそのうちの一つで、そのまま現在まで残されている。 そのドックの四周を巨大な倉庫群が取り囲む。有名な マージーサイド海洋博物館 Merseyside Maritime Museum は、その倉庫群の一部を利用したものである。 アルバート・ドックの隣には「キャニング・ドック」 (Canning Dock) という、もう一つの大きなドックがある。 そのドック内には船舶修理用の3つのドライ・ドックが設けられている。 その一角に無造作に屋外展示されているのがこの巨大な3枚翼プロペラ (three-bladed propeller) である。 1915年5月7日ドイツのUボート (U-20) の魚雷攻撃を受けるまでリバープールとニューヨーク間の大西洋横断定期航路に 就航していた大型豪華客船「ルシタニア号」のものである。 [参考] 背後に見えるレンガ造りの館はアルバート・ドックを取り囲む倉庫群である。画像には写っていないが、左手に海洋博物館 建っている。 案内パネルには次のように記されている。 "Lusitania Propeller, 1909 This propeller was one of four from the Liverpool based passenger liner RMS Lusitania (1907). She sailed between Liverpool and New York until she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-20 on 7 May 1915 with the loss of 1,201 lives. Lusitania and her sister ship Mauretania were owned by Liverpool's Cunard Line and carried passengers and mail on regular services to the USA. Lusitania held the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic by a passenger vessel, making the journey in under 4.5 days. This propeller was fitted in 1909 to improve her speed. Lusitania continued her transatlantic run after the outbreak of World War I until she was torpedoed and sank in under twenty minutes, off the coast of southern Ireland. People were outraged by the delibrate targeting of a passenger ship and Lusitania's fate still causes controversy today."
